SUPERBLOOM – a collaborative debut between Maarten Vos and Nils Davidse – will be released with Mylja on June 25th 2021.

Cellist Maarten Vos and pianist Nils Davidse became close friends over a shared love for modular synthesizers. Two musicians with a taste for contemporary electronic music, Vos and Davidse began experimenting and constantly extending each other's boundaries in hour-long colourful improvisations in the studio. Both of them being occupied with other projects, their monthly recording sessions became moments of pure freedom.

By closely listening to each others’ experiments, Vos and Davidse intuitively know what is necessary to accommodate the other, without verbal communication. Nils: “‘Polypore’ was created in 2015, during one of our first get-togethers. This is one of those tracks where one of us is clearly trying out a new piece of gear or a new technique. You can hear Maarten experiment with a touchbar, resulting in a birdlike song structure floating through the track.”

Most of SUPERBLOOM came to life in and around a forest cabin, a piece of unspoiled nature tucked away in the Dutch riparian woodlands. Crickets travel through the recording of ‘Nocturn,’ as the duo sat under the trees one night, listening to the vivid sound produced by their collective wings. ‘Burgundian composing,’ Davidse and Vos call it; a process that intuitively follows the richness of its surroundings. As moments unfolded through the sounds of the forest and its many natural inhabitants, a rhythmic tap on the cello’s wooden body and then various objects found around the house, such as an obsolete barbecue, or even a sudden vintage tractor parade, everything inevitably became part of the experience that cultivated this album.

SUPERBLOOM is a true jungle of vivid and organic sounds that reflect both Vos’s and Davidse’s musical backgrounds intertwined in a melodic and harmonically rich soundscape. It’s a many layered affair, created with analog and digital synths, some hints of piano and cello, field recordings and processing through different kinds of tape machines.

Maarten Vos & Nils Davidse - SUPERBLOOM - will be released on June 25th 2021 as limited edition crystal clear vinyl (200 only) including beautiful artwork and design by visual artist Tjitske Oosterholt.
